First Sighting...

I envision this being roughly 10", including the pedestal. I couldn't decide whether to approach this as an idol (something that cultists might display upon an altar) or a direct representation (a Cthulhu action figure, as Dustin would say). I prefer to sculpt in a somewhat realistic style, though I was attracted to the idea of a pedestal. So, I thought, why be limited to either approach, why not just blend them together in a way that appeals to me the most and just let it be what it wants to be. So, this is where it led me. I liked the idea of Cthulhu emerging from something (R'lyeh, perhaps, or maybe the idol is coming alive), with a slightly contorted posture for added interest. I find the ambiguous quality to be rather appealing, as it allows the viewer to involve more of his or her imagination.

Diehard fans might notice the lack of wings, I think the beginnings of them will be suggested on it's back, but this sculpture will be more about the mass of tentacles. Great wings on it's back would require some added casting challenges, perhaps that could be included in a future version of the sculpture.

Currently, the plan is to provide three versions of this sculpture for sale. The first will be plain resin, for the modelers who like to paint things themselves (thanks for the suggestion, Kristof). Second, a version I'll paint myself, likely a faux finish of stone or oxidized metal. Third, a collector's edition cast in a more exotic substance, such as cold cast marble or bronze, perhaps.

I've received a number of inquiries about pricing. I hesitate to quote anything until I see how much time goes into the sculpting, and how much material goes into the casting.

Until next time,

~Paul
