the Deep Ones
Hello!
I am planning to sculpt some 'Deep Ones', which are essentially fish-men from the pulp horror stories of H.P. Lovecraft. Wikipedia Entry
If any of you are familiar with these, I'd greatly appreciate some input, please! Here's a concept sketch of their anatomy, though I'd like to create a number of poses. I think the scale will be 25mm heroic, meaning features will be slightly exaggerated for ease of painting and view-ability on the table top (just like Citadel minis). If all goes well, these will be cast and available for sale!
Any suggestions? Does it match your mind's eye?
thanks for looking,
~Paul
p.s. The wizard painting is coming along nicely, I may be finished by the end of the week!

Hi Paul,
I like you design. Maybe for a 25 mm mini, the head could be a tad bigger, but I'd say it's a very convincing rendition of a deep one. The pose is dynamic and the look if fierce, so, it's all good!

Hmmm I wish I saw this sooner.
Lovecraft described the deep ones as 'Ichthic' and 'batrachian' or rather toadlike and fishlike at the same time. Bulging eyes and a smoother skin, large gulping mouth.
I envision deepones to be rather like what 'slaadi' were described as in older D&D manuals like fiend folio. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_fHdZDd_Y1Es/SuNkg7uCUyI/AAAAAAAAACY/fsYAY2LZv_g/s320/FF_slaad_crop+copy.jpg l
I always envisioned deep ones to be a bit thinner, but considering how human/deep on hybrids are a rather deformed bunch, a thicker stock is more monstrous. Basically, I like everything about your sketch with the exception of the eyes which, IMO, should bulge a bit more to evince a slightly more froglike appearance.
It would be good to see 3 or 4 deep one models in the proposed scale, as everyone else who has ever attempted it (Old grenadier and EM4 miniatures) lack quite a bit in the more refined areas of aesthetics.
Poses could be anything from shambling, to creepingly aggressive.
Oh one other thing. They were quite famous for their jewelry. Lots of strange baubles crafted from gold. Things that could really only fit a deep one never really appeared to fit with a human form. Because of that description by Lovecraft, it would logically be assumed that the deep ones wore them, at least somewhat frequently if for no other reason than for rituals to mother hydra and dagon.

P.S. We miss your presence on Dakka mate!
