Axis Mundi

Hello!

It's not too common that I get to do personal work, so I jumped on this chance.  It's inspired by a CD/booklet by artist Alex Grey, "the Visionary Artist".  I've been illustrating since about '93, and so my focus has been mostly pleasing art directors and publishers' customers, which doesn't always leave room for my own explorations.  Of course I try to cram in as much of my interests into any assignment, there's often a lot of compromise due to the assignments requirements.  This is casein on illustration board, 11x16".  The exercise is to envision your own person access point of exploring the subconscious and "super-conscious".

Cheers!

~Paul

Paul, this is amazing work, as per usual.

Look up Matt Cardin. I think this piece and Matt's view on the weird fiction and overall spiritual omniverse might fit.

        My pleasure, Master Carrick.

The image and description quickly put Mr. Cardin to mind.

This is a fantastic piece, so much motion, mood and mystery. The whole setting is fantastic and the transition of colors and textures is wondrous. Love it!

Thanks so much, Nick!  My first attempt with this piece was much more like what one might expect for "spiritual art"... lots of airy pastel tones, etc.  It just didn't feel sincere or "me", and it felt a bit like an illustration of someone's expectations and not my personal access point to my imagination.  I imagine these delvings would be mysterious, and for me that means shadows and deep colors.

People should check out Nick's blog, there's monsters to be seen there!

Nice painting. It looks very cool, which is a nice departure from the weather of late.

Thanks, Duffy, I guess I better quit shaving, then!

The snow sort of surprised me... I think it felt more mysterious and appropriate, as exploring one's super/subconscious seems to be about uncovering mysteries. It also allowed more view of the trees and distant hills/mountain- I've based this on woods that I am very familiar with. Sometimes you can't see the trees for the leaves.
